Robert Gebbia serves as the CEO of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Since joining AFSP, Gebbia has developed a nationwide network of 74 chapters and increased AFSP’s annual revenue from $700,000 to $45 million. Under his leadership, AFSP has become the largest private funder of suicide research in the world, created public awareness campaigns and educational programs that have reached millions, established a network of support for those affected by suicide, and launched the Out of the Darkness Walks to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. In 2009, Gebbia led the effort to bring AFSP and the Suicide Prevention Action Network together to create AFSP’s Public Policy arm, which has 50,000 volunteer advocates and secured hundreds of millions in state and federal funding for suicide prevention.
Gebbia serves on the Executive Committee of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, the CEO Alliance for Mental Health, and is past Chair of the Board of the National Health Council. He has an extensive background in nonprofit management, strategic planning, fundraising, and program development. Prior to joining AFSP, he had a successful career with the United Way and served as a Public Health Advisor for the City of New York. He received his master’s degree in Sociology from the New School for Social Research and completed the Harvard Business School’s Human Services Management Executive Program.
